The Jewish holiday Yom Kippur is a special day of atonement. You’ll find that even amongst the most secular of Jews this holiday is observed. There are several daily activities that are abstained from during Yom Kippur. First and most obviously the observers fast for twenty four hours. They start fasting a half an hour before sundown on the day before the holiday and finish it by eating a large meal after nightfall on the day of Yom Kippur. This meal is very special and of course the observers breaking their fast are very hungry. They say food is flavored best by hunger, so everything must be delicious.

Other things abstained from during Yom Kippur are drinking, washing, and wearing leather shoes. In the country of Israel itself it is actually taboo to be seen eating in public during the fasting period. However, throughout the world it is acknowledged and encouraged that some people with medical problems shouldn’t take part in the fast. Of course, children aren’t required to take part either.

In the country of Israel you’ll find people go even farther in abstaining for this holiday. All businesses of commerce are closed. There is no driving on the roads unless it’s an emergency and the television and other electronics are off in most homes. This may seem like a lot but it’s only for the twenty four hour period of the fast. As soon as it’s over a very large family meal is held with prayer and foods rich in carbohydrates. You can celebrate this special holiday if you happen to have a very large family gathering by using Yom Kippur themed paper plates, napkins and tablecloths.
