Oktoberfest History and Facts
The Oktoberfest celebration is usually celebrated in places all over the world, but we all relate it to Germany and it represents a celebration of all things culturally German in origin. Many people when they left Germany and moved to other places have started up this Oktoberfest celebration to bring back some of that native fun and feel. Now a days in places where Oktoberfest is celebrated regularly it serves as an opportunity for descendents of German immigrants to take part in some cultural celebration of their ancestry. For those of non-German descent it serves as an opportunity to learn a little bit about German culture.
Whether you are just looking to learn about German culture and food or are trying to immerse yourself in some of your ancestors’ culture you can easily throw yourself a fun Oktoberfest party. Don’t worry about timing. The name does imply that the Oktoberfest is traditionally held in the month of October, but you can safely get away with having this celebration anytime during the fall.
Make it a large affair. If you can request space at the local recreation center or banquet hall so lots of people can come. Invite local artists and those involved with German cultural achievements to come and participate or even present a show at the event. Then invite all of your friends and family and go a little further by inviting the whole neighborhood to the Oktoberfest celebration.
If you are concerned you won’t have enough food tell your guests to bring their own German dishes. Make this a potluck event so you only have to provide the decorations. Decorations can be bought in bulk and you’ll be able to find plenty that are themed after the holiday so you can use Oktoberfest themed plates, cups, napkins and tablecloths for the celebration.
