Chanukah History and Facts
Chanukah, or the festival of lights, lasts for eight nights and is filled with family fun, and family time! Although Chanukah is not a major holiday for the Jewish religion, it is the better known of them. Every night for eight nights, the candles on the menorah are lit, one at a time. The family is gathered together; all the food is prepared with much love and much more tradition, special little presents are bought and are opened. But it’s the menorah that is the star of these nights. Even thought this is a very traditional time, one different idea for making that “star” a bit more fun is to have all kinds of foods available for the kids (big ones included), who have to use those foods to make a menorah! The real trick is that it has to be a working menorah, and it has to be edible; the candles have to light and not fall apart! Oh, the ideas they will come up with! And, it will taste delicious, or at least that’s the idea!!!
‘Hide the Gelt’ is a game the kids usually enjoy playing during Chanukah. In order to play this game the children must either be out of the house, or occupied so they can’t see where the gelt is being hid. Before the children leave for the night they are told there is a treat, the chocolate gelt, hidden for them in each room, but they have to find it before they leave!
Even though Chanukah isn’t classed as a major holiday, it’s a special time nonetheless, and as such it’s worthy of celebrating. Using the ideas above you can make this holiday a happy one for you and your loved ones.
