Anniversary History and Facts
Anniversary is a Latin word, which originated from the word anniversarius, which means turning yearly. This word has been a part of English language since the year 1230 and is a day known to celebrate the past events that took place on the same date, day and year. The word anniversary was used first for the Christian feasts to honor the saints. The most common type of anniversaries includes the birthdays and the wedding anniversaries. Both these events are celebrated to share the happiness and love.
The custom of giving gifts on wedding anniversary started in Central Europe. During the medieval times, it was a practice seen in Germans that the friends used to present the wife with a garland of silver when she had been with her husband for 25 years. The silver represented the harmony in a relationship that made it possible for such a long time. This custom carried on to the modern times where the husband and wife both present each other with silver rings or silver ornaments and gold rings or gold ornaments on the 25th and 50th year of the anniversary.
Another very interesting fact that I would like to share with you is that the first anniversary is known as the plastic or paper anniversary. The second anniversary is known as cotton. The 25th anniversary is known as silver and the 50th is known as gold and so on. Every year that passes by is a ladder step with which the couples are coming close together and narrowing down the distances among each other as it should be. Therefore, anniversary is a time to share gifts, love and happiness to strengthen the bond and get to know each other more as the time proceeds.
