American Idol is part of the Idol series, originated as the UK show Pop Idol, a singing talent contest to determine the best "undiscovered" young singer in the country. Since it's debut in 2002, American Idol has become one of the most highly publicized music competitions in the world. Hopeful American Idol contestants are screened by preliminary panels to be chosen for singing talent or humorous potential. Contestants find themselves auditioning before the panel of judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, and the occasional celebrity guest. At the end of the season, the winner obtains $1 million dollars, a five-album major record deal, a built-in fanbase, and is dubbed the next "American Idol".
